Birthdays and cycling

May is my favorite month of the year! In Minnesota it means spring, but it is also my birthday. I celebrated a big one this year.  Count the candles and see if you can guess! It is a privilege to grow older.

I try very hard not to take anything for granted. I am grateful for the many blessings that have been showered on me throughout my life. Sure, I have had some pretty good curve balls thrown my way over the years, but, I have risen from them a stronger person. I celebrated my birthday with my family, including a sister and a brother who joined us for the long Memorial Weekend. Here is a picture of some of the rascals at my birthday dinner.

Cycling season is well underway now for me. I had a slow start with our Minnesota winter/spring and also my asthma. But, I am very happy to report that I have already logged in over 1100 miles this year. Some of the miles are on the trainer with about 2/3rds out on the roads and trails despite the cold. It is such a pleasure to ride now that we are topping off in the upper 70s and lower 80s. This Saturday is my first charity ride, the American Diabetes Association’s Tour de Cure. I had planned to do the 100 mile, but decided to scale back to the 62 miler. I feel ready!! The 62 mile ride winds through both Minneapolis and St Paul and surrounding areas. On the map below it is the green route.

This year, my sister who has a son with Type 1 diabetes, will ride with me as will two of my own adult children. I am excited!

Hope you are all moving forward with your own fitness and getting healthy goals.

  1. Wow!!! 62 miles and rest stop L!!! That's a lot of pedaling. I love the pic of the kids on the porch. They will too when they are adults :)

  2. Happy Birthday, Michele! Congrats to you for the dedication to cycling, which can only make you healthier. I love the photo! You look so good. Yes, May has been lovely in Minnesota, especially lately. It is a special time of year. I would still like to get together sometime.

  3. Great job with the biking!!! Scaling back is sometimes the wise choice!!!

    Happy birthday.....
