Happy Monday!

My blogger friends, Shane and Ann recently posted some of their non scale victories and sweet stories of their own triumphs as they move toward better health. Sharon also summarized her journey in 2011. Well, those three got me to ruminating about how far I have come in the last 6 months, sure, I am only 1/3rd through my journey toward better health. But, to me it is a FIRST that I start a new year already on a journey to get healthy and not a restart. This is the first new year year that I weigh less at the beginning of the new year year than I did at the beginning of the year past! I also was thinking about two very tangible ways that help me to understand how much weight I have lost and how far I have come. One is baby Noah, my 16-month-old grandson. He weighs in at about 24 pounds, which is slightly less than the amount of weight I have lost.
When I see him, hold and carry him around I FEEL just how much weight I lost!. Second, I have a pair of jeans, size 20, with the stretchy elastic waist band (you know the kind). These jeans are way too big now (I even have to fold the waist band over twice so that they do not fall off!), but I still wear them. The fact that I can swim around in them is a great reminder of how far I have come and a great way of keeping me focused on my journey and moving forward. Wearing them makes it easy for me to pass up on foods (you know the kind) that are not part of my plan.

What about you? Do you have tangible reminders of how far you have come that help to keep your own focus up?
TTFN and Stay Strong, Michele

  1. GREAT WORK, KIDDO! Big hugs on your successes! I can't WAIT to hold my 10-month-old and think, "Wow...I've lost what he weighs! CRAZY!"

P.S. SUPER cute baby! SUPER, SUPER cute baby!

  2. Cutie! I have a nephew and a great-nephew who share his name. To me, you are a role model. That is how very far you have come. When I read about your progress and strength and motivation, it is inspiring.

  3. I LOVE that Noah weighs about as much as you've lost. That's gotta feel good when you pick him up, knowing that you used to carry that much more weight around!!! Have a great Monday!!

  4. That is so cool about your tangible reminders. Picking your your grandson and having those lose pants, I bet that really puts a smile on your face. Every time I cross my legs when I'm sitting down I get a little smirk on my face. Only took me 20+ years to be able to do that! Things like that keep me going and staying on plan as well. Love those NSV!! Have a great week Michele!!

  7. Oh, Noah is adorable!
How cool that he gets to be the tangible reminder of how much you have lost. I like those kinds of reminders, they help make it "real".

    Here's to a very successful 2011!

  8. Noah is a beautiful little guy! How lucky you are. Also, I'm so glad that I found your blog this year. I've been debating about continuing (blogging that is), for a variety of reasons. If I choose to continue, I will pare down my time spent blogging, due to other obligations, but I will still be checking into yours. You have done very well this past year! Take care...

  9. Good grief that's a cute baby!

Pictures from Anne Franks house would be SO AMAZING. I teach this unit every year, so I could definitely work it in next year. That would be so cool to have!

Awesome Star Wars Pics btw :D

  10. What a little munchkin!! It's nice to have something physical to hold as a reminder of how far you've come, and a great feeling, too. I have before/after pics on my blog as a reminder, but only one actual photo of me at my heaviest and that rests on my bathroom mirror. A gentle reminder every day. Lovely blog you have, Michele. Thanks for sharing (and allowing me to share as well)

  11. I am just waiting for that first moment of realization! Having just started my weight loss journey, it is nice to hear how losing the pounds has translated to real life victories for others. I look forward to sharing many victories thought this next year, both on and off the scale. Thanks also for stopping by my new blog and leaving an encouraging word.

  12. Noah is precious! Handsome little guy. The great thing is that as he grows, so will your weight-loss, so he should always be a good marker for you.

    Congrats on your great victories!

  13. that is one cute grand baby! I love the parallel between his weight and how much you have lost!

You have come a long way Michele, and you are going even further! 2011 is our year sister! Let's get that bad boy rolling and post NSV's out the wazoo!

  14. Noah is so precious!!

I do have tangible reminders of the first 100 or so pounds lost. I still find myself surprised when stairs don't get me out of breath. And when I carry in forty pound bags of dog food, they feel so heavy. I can't believe I used to carry around nearly three times that much all the time.

There are other times when I don't fully realize how far I've come. It's in those moments that it's most important I sit and reflect a bit on my progress.

  15. I don't fit in my huge sweat pants any more, but when it was super cold (way below zero) last week, I had on three pairs of pants, and my huge sweat pants were on top. They only kinda fit because I had 2 sets on under them, and still, they felt a bit loose! Great reminder, huh? Vee at http://veegettinghealthy.blogspot.com

  16. You are doing AWESOME!!!! Sounds like you need to go shopping!! The next size will look great on you!! Noah is adorable!!!

A while back I was carrying a huge load of laundry down the stairs and thought I should weigh it - it was sooo heavy. I thought it would weigh around 50 pounds. Nope....20 pounds. I could not believe how much weight that was. To think I had 5+ extra loads on my body. Shocking!! (Still have 3 loads to go!!)

Keep up the great work and stay focused!!!

  17. Thanks for the encouragement on my blog, Michele, and also for considering volunteering at the TNC (it already has an acronym!) with the plants. Too cool. Also thanks for the author suggestion. I have found some research - all pretty new (2005 and up). I do see programs integrating nature, but nothing like what I envision yet, (therapeutic nature center). Last night I had some doubt, but I will keep pressing on, this is so putting me out of my comfort zone.. lol. Congrats on your successes, I love how you use tangible reminders to keep your mind on track. Here's to 2011 - may it bring you much health and success. :) Janelle

  19. What a beautiful reminder of how far you have come. Congratulations!

I am wearing a pair of jeans that had hung in my closet for three years, but where too small. When I bough them, I had already lost some weight and only needed to lose another 15 lbs. or so to get into them. Unfortunately, I gained back everything I had lost plus more. So the jeans hung there as a reminder of my failure. Now I wear them proudly as a reminder of my success. Now they are even getting a little bit big.
